From the point of view of Northwest Coast people, potlatches sustained the reciprocal relationships among noble houses, including their dependent families. WebCommunal meals, the agape (“love feasts”) of the ancient Greeks, banquets in town and country, brotherhoods, initiatory groups, gatherings for dancing and music, intimate or utopian celebrations–miniature festivals of this kind are found in all civilizations and are flourishing thanks to video and other modern facilities.
