WebThe viaduct was engineered by John Strain, and is dated 1880. [1] It was built for the Callander and Oban Railway . It was listed as a Category A listed building in 2007. [1] On 6 June 2010, the Falls of Cruachan derailment happened nearby, when a two-car diesel multiple unit derailed and caught fire after hitting a rock. Construction commenced in 1959, and the power station was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 15 October 1965. The concept was designed by Sir Edward MacColl, who died before it opened. The civil engineering design of the scheme was carried out by James Williamson & Partners of Glasgow, and the main project contractors were William Tawse of Aberdeen and Edmund Nuttall of Camberley.
